Android Phones May Soon Be Able to Use Phone Links as Webcams

Your Android smartphone may soon be able to be used as a webcam on Windows desktops, thanks to Microsoft's Phone Link and its related Link to Windows desktop app.

Codes that suggest the implementation of such a feature through a future update have reportedly recently been discovered during the disassembly of the app's APK file, according to the Android Authority.

Other new capabilities, such as "auto-framing" and notifications, were added by the publication about the webcam functionality for connected phones found in the codes. According to rumors, the former functions similarly to Apple's Center Stage feature, which automatically frames and zooms in on users during meetings and other events.

Code traces have also been found that point to customization choices like face retouch, night mode, HDR, soft focus (bokeh), and more. In the meantime, the user is alerted in the event of certain faults, such as the phone overheating, by the previously stated alerts feature.

By launching this on Phone Link, Microsoft hopes to take on Apple's Continuity Camera feature, which lets users use the iPhone's (possibly) superior camera for video conferences on Mac-based devices and gives them access to features like Desk View, Portrait Mode, an arguably better camera, and Center Stage.

Of course, Phone Link's exclusive support for Windows and Android sets it apart from its rival; nevertheless, this is only applicable to supported smartphone models from Samsung and Honor; more recent additions to the list include those from OPPO, OnePlus, and Realme.

This purportedly planned feature will save you the hassle of turning your smartphone into a webcam without having to download third-party apps like Droidcam and others.

Microsoft has not yet announced a release date for the new quality of life enhancement, and it is unknown which apps will genuinely be able to utilize it. Not to be overlooked is the fact that Phone Link is also compatible with iPhones, albeit with less functionality than its Android equivalent.
